ELAINE LING FUND FOR WOMEN IN PHOTOGRAPHY
Dear friends,
As you know, Elaine Ling’s deep enthusiasm for photography was matched only by her curiosity about the world at large. On her extensive expeditions during her 30 year-career, she photographed desert landscapes in Australia, Ethiopia and South America, archaeological sites, the mystique of natural phenomena such as the Baobab tree, and the nomadic peoples of Mongolia.
Elaine was also an advocate for women working in the field and a generous supporter of the arts. She was a dedicated and longstanding supporter of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and its remarkable photography holdings. Not only is she represented in the AGO’s Collection, but also, with her support, the AGO acquired several important works for the photography collection.
To honour her legacy, we are creating a special fund in The Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, The Elaine Ling Fund for Women in Photography. This fund will honour Elaine’s achievements and passion for the medium. In recognition of Elaine’s interests and commitments, The Elaine Ling Fund for Women in Photography would be primarily directed toward the purchase of artwork by women photographers for the AGO’s growing and important photography collection. Works purchased would acknowledge this Fund every time they are exhibited or reproduced.
Our goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 for the Fund – the amount required to establish an endowment in Elaine’s memory. A number of family and friends have already pledged their generous support, but we need your help to reach our goal. We invite you to join us in celebrating Elaine’s life and passion for photography by making a contribution towards the Elaine Ling Fund for Women in Photography.

The Elaine Ling Fund for Women in Photography at the AGO will pay tribute to Elaine’s important impact. Join artist Elaine Ling at a signing event for her latest book, Talking Stones: A Photographic Sojourn (2015). The event is presented in conjunction with three of her photographs on view at the Ryerson Image Centre (RIC) as part of our series, From the Collection, a rotating display highlighting works from the Ryerson Image Centre’s permanent collection.

2015 was a very rewarding year for me, in terms of publications and a very welcoming time in Medellin, Colombia. I published Talking Stones, with Kehrer, a book of stone places from my 30 years of wandering the world, a beautiful portfolio box of 12 Baobab images with PhotoEye 11.4×14.5”, and a One-Picture book Cuba Rooms with Nazraeli Press and a publication with Blue Sky.
In progress is a portfolio of platinum prints by Salto Ulbeek (Belgium) presented in a hand made box by Laurel Parker (Paris) of 12 Baobab images, 45.6×57 cm, edition of 8. My trip to Colombia involved 3 exhibitions, lectures, a workshop and an expedition to the Guajira where I met and photographed the indigenous Wayuu people.

ABOUT THE WORK
In Elaine Ling’s large-format black-and-white series, the artist set out across South Africa, Mali, and Madagascar to photograph one of the world’s most ancient living organisms: the Baobab tree. Able to grow to spectacular size in some of the most infertile soil, the Baobab provides for the community that surrounds it. Generations have depended upon the Baobab tree, which not only provides shelter but it is also a nutritious food source with its fruit and a renewable source for materials for textiles and shelter.
Ling’s use of 4×5 Polaroid Positive/Negative film serves to enhance the trees ancient and alien appearance, and the large-scale 30 x 40” archival pigment exhibition prints echo the scale and scope of the monumental Baobab

A shaman stone sends its song across the Gobi desert. Tibetan prayer flags flutter in the wind sending prayers to the blue sky from a celebratory rock at Namtso Lake. Pictograms found in cliffs in the American Southwest, Africa, Australia and Asia bear witness to the close relationship of man to the spirit world. Natural rocks stand majestically at their empowered sites.
The 120 black-and-white images pictured in this book were taken with a 4×5 view camera, mostly on Polaroid 55 PN film. For 30 years, the photographer wandered through deserts, canyons and jungles gathering the mythology of “stones.” Across four continents, the photographer travels with her strong cultural sensitivities: her birth heritage from the East; and her philosophies from the West where she had studied medicine, and lived from the age of nine.
In trust, we place a certain permanence in stones. But their fragility is at risk of destruction by the erosive forces of Nature and the destructive forces of war. This book offers a stunning global view of a very unique presentation of natural and ancient stones.
